Using an NCV test, nerve damage is examined. During the test, a nerve is directly stimulated by an electrical current to see how it reacts. With NCV tests, a number of muscular and neuromuscular conditions can be identified. In some circumstances, NCV tests are combined with electromyograms or EMGs. Doctors can diagnose neurological or muscular diseases with the aid of EMGs. By measuring how well a muscle responds to nerve signals, an EMG can determine whether a person has a muscle condition or a nerve disease. A hospital stay is not required because NCV tests are frequently carried out as outpatient procedures. A doctor will ask you to put on a hospital gown, sit or lay down, and remove any jewelry, eyeglasses, hairpins, or other metal objects that could interfere with the test before starting.
