An NCV test is used to check for nerve damage. An electrical current is used to directly stimulate a nerve during the test to observe how it responds. A variety of muscular and neuromuscular conditions can be diagnosed with NCV tests. In some cases, electromyograms, also known as EMGs, are performed along with NCV tests. EMGs are also used by doctors to help identify neurological or muscular diseases. An EMG can identify whether a person has a muscle condition or a nerve disease by assessing how well a muscle reacts to nerve signals. NCV tests are typically performed as outpatient procedures, so a hospital stay is not necessary. Wearing a hospital gown, sitting or lying down, and taking off any jewelry, eyeglasses, hairpins, or other metal objects that might interfere with the test are all requested prior to the procedure by a doctor.
