An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test that evaluates how well the brain is functioning. A series of nerve impulses that result in electrical signals power the brain. Through the scalp, these signals—also known as brainwaves—can be captured. During the test, a digital video recording will also be made. If your child is undergoing a sleep EEG, they will be encouraged to sleep for a while during the EEG test. We at GOSH advise using one of two sleep-inducing techniques, such as sleep deprivation, or giving your child melatonin. To detect brain activity that might not be present when your child is awake, the EEG can be recorded while your child is sleepy and drowsy. It is a useful method for gaining a broad understanding of how the brain functions because it can be used on patients of all ages and skill levels. It is beneficial for both more general inquiries and more specialized issues, like blackouts and seizures.
