A test to determine how well the brain is working is called an electroencephalogram (EEG). The brain is powered by a series of nerve impulses that translate into electrical signals. These signals, also referred to as brainwaves can be recorded through the scalp. A digital video recording of the test will also be made. Your child will be urged to sleep for a while during the EEG test if they are undergoing a sleep EEG. The GOSH team suggests using one of two sleep-inducing strategies, such as sleep deprivation or melatonin administration, for your child. The EEG can be recorded while your child is sleepy or drowsy in order to find brain activity that may not be present when your child is awake. Because it can be applied to patients of all ages and levels of expertise, it is a useful technique for gaining a comprehensive understanding of how the brain functions. Both more general questions and more specific problems, like blackouts and seizures, can benefit from it.
